![]() Donation Form The University Council determined in 2006 that all fundraising done using the name of the University of Melbourne MUST be approved by the Advancement Committee PRIOR to any appeal letters or approaches being made to anyone. The Application Form is for simple appeals such as those the clubs run in conjunction with MUS, the information needed is reasonably simple and includes an explanation of the goals (to review performance after the appeal), the budget section (who is paying the costs involved – MUS?, the Club?, who is staffing the activity?), and providing copies of all the materials (eg letters and forms) that will be sent out. Under the University’s Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, it can raise funds for the “purposes” of the University – these are defined in the Melbourne University Act 1958 as the “objects” of the University as follows: (a) to provide and maintain a teaching and learning environment of excellent quality offering higher education at an international standard; (b) to undertake scholarship, research and research training of international standing and to apply that scholarship and research to the advancement of knowledge and to the benefit of the well-being of the Victorian, Australian and international communities; (c) to equip graduates of the University to excel in their chosen careers and to contribute to the life of the community; (d) to serve the Victorian, Australian and international communities and the public interest by— (i) enriching cultural and community life; (ii) elevating public awareness of educational, scientific and artistic developments; (iii) promoting critical enquiry, informed intellectual discourse and public debate within the University and in the wider society; (e) to confer degrees and grant diplomas, certificates and other awards. This means that appeals can only raise funds for, for example, “football activities at the University” not for “the Football Club.” The appeal letters must be signed by the Director of MUS, possibly in conjunction with the Club President, and could also be accompanied by a flier showing the impact of donations on students associated with the Club.
