Myotherapy

The cause of physical pain and symptoms can be "myofascial" in many conditions. Myofascial pain might originate from trigger points ('knots') or abnormal muscle (myo) contraction ('tightness') in muscle or fascia, and can be caused by many factors such as poor posture, overuse of muscles, stress.

Myotherapy is a tension and pain-reduction therapy based on manually locating and releasing specific trigger points originating in muscle layers of the body.

Often the muscular conditions that cause myofascial pain and dysfunction affect movement and mobility. To restore and maintain normal integrity of the soft tissue structure of the body, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia, myotherapists employ a number of modalities such as:

  • soft tissue manipulation (e.g. ischaemic compression, trigger point therapy)
  • myofascial passive/active stretching
  • myofascial dry-needling
  • electro-mechanical stimulation
  • thermal therapy
  • corrective exercises

Myotherapy is applied in the preventative, corrective, and rehabilitative phases of therapy.
