Tuesday 17 July
By David Scott
Melbourne’s newest professional rugby union team, the AAMI Melbourne Rebels, will be welcomed to the University of Melbourne on Thursday 2 August. The team will use the University’s first-class training facilities in preparation for and during the inaugural Mazda Australian Rugby Championship (MARC) season. The University’s facilities have been used for other top sporting events including the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) CEO Mr Ron Steiner says the VRU is delighted that the University is providing access to its world-class sports facilities. “This will greatly enhance the team’s prospects for success in the national competition.”
Led by Wallaby, David Croft, the AAMI Melbourne Rebels will be joined by former Wallaby Matt Cockbain, Victorian-bred Wallaby Digby Loane and a host of other Super 14 and rising national representatives. The framework for the Rebels logo is the Weary Dunlop Rugby Shield. Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop, a graduate of the University of Melbourne and a former Melbourne University Rugby Football Club (MURFC) player/Wallaby representative is the personification of Victorian Rugby - strong, innovative, proud with a liberal sprinkling of humour.
Director of Rugby MURFC, Simon Davis, says that the Rebels training at the University is a very exciting development for the University rugby club. ”It will provide an excellent opportunity for the young Victorian rugby players to be exposed to a professional standard of sport. The University training headquarters will showcase the connection between sport, education, the community and business”.
The Rebels play their first game against the Canberra Vikings at Manuka Oval on 11 August. Their first home game will be at Olympic Park on Saturday 18 August. For all other AAMI Melbourne Rebels information please go to the web site www.vicrugby.com.au.
