Seven Melbourne University women’s footballers took to the turf for the annual VWFL Vic Country versus Vic Metro Football Game at the MCG on Saturday. The game served as a curtain-raiser to the Collingwood and Carlton clash for the Peter Mac Cup.

Belinda Blay held the Mugar banner high in the metro team. Whilst fellow Mugar teammates Jane Clifton, Jess Egan, Chyloe Kurdas, Leisha Jungawalla, Kristen Douglas and Natalie Wood sported the country colours. The game was played over two 20 minute halves in front of a considerable crowd.

Metro kicked away to an early 2-goal lead early in the first half. Country responded to the early attacks drawing scores level by half time. Resolute in their desire for the football, Country reemerged after half-time with a 2-goal burst – but it was not enough to seal victory. In the dying moments of the game, Metro kicked several well-timed goals to steal the win from their country competitors. Vic Metro 6.2 (38) beat Vic Country 5.1 (31).

Belinda Blay was named the Best Metro for the game, while Jane Clifton earned herself the Best Country player accolade.

In the regular season, the Mugars shrugged off the St. Albans Spurs 12.7 (79) to 8.13 (61) in Premier Division Seniors on Sunday. The team is currently ranked first on the ladder. The Reserves also won convincingly, 13.13 (91) to St. Albans 1.2 (8). The Thirds weren’t so lucky, defeated 12.19 (91) to 2.5 (17) by Heidelberg.
