The Melbourne University Basketball Club Big V teams finished Round 11 in promising form. And it was a case of Angels versus Devils in the women’s Division One University-Werribee clash.

The Werribee Devils entered the game as favourites, clearly outranking University on the league ladder - 3rd and 9th respectively. The Black Angels, unconcerned by the statistics, followed their game plan to topple their higher ranked opponents; 65 – 50. Renee Tuck, averaging 13.6 points per game with a total of 150 points for the season to date, had another great game for the Black Angels.

The Division Two men didn’t fair as well as the women, being defeated in a close game by the Coburg Giants, 67 – 70. The loss sees the University men slip out of the top four and into 5th place. Coburg sits on top of the Division Two ladder. Jamie Thiessen top-scored for University and got the Black Angels back into the game with some clutch baskets in the dying minutes. Jamie’s averaging 15.3 points per game and has collected a total of 183 points over the season. Unfortunately for University, Coburg kept their heads, also scoring several last minute points to avoid a surprise defeat.

With only six rounds remaining in the season, both University teams are gearing up towards the final’s playoffs. And with encouraging results from this last round, the Black Angels just might surprise a few of their more fancies opponents.
