The University of Melbourne scored 789 to be crowned 2006 Overall Champions. Arch-rivals Monash University was second with 671 points and the University of Sydney came in third with 539 points. This was Team Melbourne University’s most dominant victory of our past three AUG Overall Champions titles. An amazing 47 of our 400-strong team were selected in Australian University Games Green & Gold teams. Outstanding individual achievements included Tom Barnes winning the Athletics 5,000m Walk and breaking the Games’ Record in the process while Tom Cade won the 400m Hurdles, Julie Bennell won Gold in the Javelin and Sophie Barker won the 3,000m Steeplechase in her first ever race. Mitch Anderson and Daniel Braunstein dominated Road Cycling, as did Stephanie McGrath and Sam Beenie. In Swimming, Kate Findeisen won the 50m and 100m Breaststroke and Alanna Tanner claimed Gold in the 50m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. And Truan Truong won Gold in the Men’s Black Belt Bantamweight Taekwondo. Having won the 2006 Australian University Games, the Australian University Championships – Snow Sports and the Australian University Championships – Rowing, the University of Melbourne can again lay claim to being Australia’s greatest sporting University for the third successive year.
