Guehrer wins World Cup gold

First year Arts student Marieke Guehrer starred for Australia in the pool overnight, winning the 100m Butterfly at the World Cup in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Guehrer won in a time of 57.51 seconds, just outside of her personal best but good enough to defeat Brooke Bishop of the USA and Mandy Loots of South Africa. Guehrer then backed up to win silver behind Bishop in 50m Freestyle, stopping the clock at 24.73 seconds and just 0.07 seconds off the gold. Guehrer was also the star of the swimming pool for Team Melbourne at the recent Australian University Games where she won three gold, a silver and a bronze medal.

After walking a personal best time of 1:26:40, Athletics Club and  newly elected committee member Tom Barnes is celebrating the achievement of winning the Australian 20km Race Walking Championship on Sunday, 24 August. Barnes crossed the line nearly 3 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. Congratulations Tom; London 2012 here we come!

Commerce/Science student Alice McNamara won her second successive World Championship crown in Austria over the weekend. Rowing in the women’s lightweight quad scull, McNamara and team mates Ingrid Fenger, Bronwen Watson and Miranda Bennett were too strong in the 2000m race, winning by some three seconds from Poland and the USA.

Women’s Cricket Club named Best Administered Club

The Melbourne University Women’s Cricket Club was named Best Administered Club for 2008/08 at the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association’s recent awards night. In recognition of the club’s management, the VWCA will fund a club member’s enrolment in a future coaching course, and a Victorian Spirit player will be provided to assist with a club training session next season.
