Athletics Club wins six in a row

Melbourne University Athletics Club claimed their sixth successive Athletics Victoria Division One Women’s Shield Final last Saturday (31/03/07) at Olympic Park.
The MUAC women progressed through to the Division One Shield Final, the premier club based competition in Victoria, after a comprehensive victory at the North-West Regional Final at Williamstown earlier in the month (24/03/07). The MUAC men on the other hand, had a narrowly qualified for the final, defeating Essendon Athletics Club by one point to claim a Shield Final berth. Many MUAC athletes had also qualified for bonus ranking points in the Shield Final via the summer track season’s elite Premier League competition.
While the women took out the blue riband Division One State Shield Final for an outstanding sixth successive season, the men's team also had a fantastic meet finishing a credible second - their best result in several years. Overall, Melbourne University Athletics Club was the premier club in Division One, with its nearest rival, Box Hill, winning the men's title but only coming third in the women’s Shield.
Outstanding MUAC performances included Bridgette Pateman winning the Long Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin and as a member of the 4x400m Relay. She also placed in the 100m, 200m, 400m Hurdles, Discus and Shot Put. Katherine Clarke won the 100/200m double and anchored the 4x400m Relay, while David Johns placed 3rd in the 100/200m double and was the lead-runner in the men’s victorious 4x400m Relay.
Fielding strong middle distance teams in both women's and men's events, MUAC had notable performances from Eliza Eddy in the 800m (2nd )and 1500m (1st); Bryony Coleman in the 800m (5th), 1500m (2nd) and 3000m (4th); Alison Smith in the 3000m (2nd); Emil Gundesen in the 800m (2nd) and 1500m (4th); Hamish Beaumont in the 3000m (3rd); and Grant Morgan in the 3000m (1st).
