Round 5 of the Big V basketball season saw the University men clinch their second win; confirming their command in the premiership chase. The Division 2 men secured their second win for the season after defeating third-ranked Blackburn, 89 - 85. The boys from Blackburn were short-priced favorites; clearly outranking University on the league ladder. In a turn of events, sixth-ranked University formulated an enterprising attack on the unsuspecting opponents; condemning Blackburn to their second consecutive defeat. University’s Musti Erdas is the highest point scorer in the team, with an average of 15.8 points per game. Jamie Thiessen and Andrew Walker average 13.8 and 13.4 respectively. The University men are now ranked fifth. The Division 1 women slipped a few rungs on the ladder following a disappointing loss to Warrnambool, 83 – 67. University was unable to crack Warrnambool’s impenetrable defence. Claire Pownell is the top point scorer for University, averaging 10.6 points per game. Pownell is the 6th highest scorer overall for the Division 1 women in the Big V League.
