The University Big V Basketball teams have reclaimed their on-court positions following an exhaustive pre-season program. Melbourne University has a small representation in the Big V League; with only two teams to shoulder the responsibility. Over the weekend (24th-25th), the Divison 1 women and the Division 2 men confronted season opponents for their first games of the 2007 competition calendar. The women spearheaded the premiership campaign, by winning the first match of the season against Shepparton; 60 - 48. Renee Tuck and Claire Pownell led the on-court onslaught, with both girls claiming 12 match points. Stephanie Neal displayed exemplary shooting skills, netting three 3-pointers. With the current standings, the girls are ranked third. The men debuted on the court against the boys from Coburg. A few early tactical faults disrupted the momentum and left the University team in slight disarray, accounting for their loss to Coburg, 80-134. Jamie Thiessen scored 17 match points, with Andrew Walker and James Fidler close behind on 15 and 12, respectively. Next week, the University boys are scheduled to play Warragul on familiar turf, at the Melbourne University Sports Centre. Hopefully, the home-ground advantage will spur the men onto a win! |
