Cricket 2nd XI rue missed opportunities

Sunday afternoon will be reflected on as one of missed opportunity, as home-side University lowered their colours to Northcote in their Group Final of Cricket Victoria’s Premier 2nd XI competition. With Northcote reeling at 6/84 in their run chase, University was unable to claim the four remaining wickets before the visitors overhauled the set target of 248.

Sent into bat, University made a solid start with openers Merriman and Barton compiling 61 runs for the first wicket. Christopher Grant was top-scorer for the home team with his innings of 57, while the remainder of the batting line-up all made starts, however failed to convert these into big runs.

Chasing early wickets, Van Cuylenberg, Kennedy, and Marshall responded to the challenge, each instrumental in reducing Northcote to 6/84. However, a gutsy 143-run seventh wicket partnership between Northcote’s Francis Gill and Michael Westland, revitalized their chase. The away side eventually reached 7/252, claiming a three-wicket victory and a hard-earned berth in the Premier 2nd XI Final against Geelong next weekend.

Matthew Marshall was best with the ball for University taking 3/52 from his 18 overs.
