After one week of finals in Cricket Victoria’s two-day competitions, University’s 2nd XI is the club’s only team remaining in the premiership hunt. At home on the Melbourne University Oval, the team was five-wicket victors over the Melbourne Cricket Club, and in doing so, secured a home group final against Northcote.

Winning the toss, and opting to bat, MCC compiled a competitive total of 312 from 100 overs, including half centuries from Ben Way (75) and Philip Lang (56). Matthew Marshall was University’s best with the ball, claiming 3/52 from his 15 overs, while Peter Murray and Reid Merriman both claimed two wickets each.

University’s chase got off to a shaky start, stumbling to 3/86, after losing the early wickets of Merriman, Barton and Minson. However, a 151 run fourth-wicket partnership between top scorer Terrence Dixon (116) and Christopher Grant (65) pointed University’s innings back in the right direction. While Dixon was eventually trapped LBW, and Murray followed suit cheaply for one, keeper Jarrod Martignago (54) and Grant guided University to victory in the 97th over.

University’s 4th XI was also in semi-final action at the weekend, however conceded defeat to North Melbourne by six wickets.
