Melbourne University Mountaineering Club Wins Award
22 June 2009; Dan Hearnden

MUMC

Yesterday at the 75th anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, MUMC was presented with a "Distinguished Service Award" for the Club's contribution to the bushwalking community. This was one of a small number of awards handed out to recognise individuals and clubs for their contributions over the last 75 years.

"Presented in recognition of a significant contribution to the enhancement and development of recreational bushwalking in Victoria, furthering the objectives of Bushwalking Victoria and adding value to the wider Victorian community."

Particulars highlighted on this award to MUMC included:

  • Our publications on Equipment for Bushwalking and Mountaineering
  • Our guides to the Victorian Alpine area
  • Ongoing contributions to Bush Search and Rescue
  • Contributions to the planning and construction of the Federation Hut on Mt Feathertop
  • Contributions to the establishment of the Great Alpine Walking Track

This award is fantastic  recognition of the proud history of MUMC. There is so much good will and support for the club throughout the bushwalking community. At the award ceremony I was approached by a number of people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, all who knew the club well and were keen to hear of our ongoing activities. It is easy to forget how significant MUMC was in the development of bushwalking in Victoria and how many people have either been members, or know members. To put it in perspective, over 20,000 people have passed through MUMC's doors since it's formation in 1944. This year is the club's own 65th anniversary!

Let's keep this great tradition going strong.
