![]() Rowers bound for World Championships Ten MUBC athletes were selected in the Australian Rowing Team to contest the 2007 World Rowing Championships, following a grueling ten days of selection trials at Syndey’s International Regatta Centre, Penrith. With August’s World Championships in Munich, Germany doubling as the Olympic Qualification Regatta, the National squad, as well as chasing medals, is aiming to qualify all boats for 2008’s Beijing Games. Karsten Forsterling, James Marburg and Cameron McKenzie McHarg return to the powerful men’s eight outfit, which will aim to avenge a disappointing fourth placing at last year’s Eton World Championships. With the addition of 41 year old Olympic legend James Tomkins to the combination, Australia will be chasing the gold medal that has eluded them in this event since 1986. Ironically, Tomkins was part of that combination. Jason Heard has been selected as a reserve for this crew, and will compete in the coxed pair at Munich with Australian Institute of Sport partner Fergus Pragnell and Marty Rabjohns (cox). Kim Crow, Sarah Heard, Phoebe Stanley and Lizzie Patrick (cox) comprise part of the 12 person women’s sweep squad, from which the eight, coxless pair and coxless four will be selected. Expectations will be high on this talented and young squad as they enter the international racing season as reigning World Champions in the coxless four, and looking to regain their 2005 World Championship mantle in the eight, following a bronze medal last year. On the women’s sculling side, Catriona Sens will again contest the women’s quadruple scull and is the only remaining member of last year’s silver medal-winning combination. However, the addition of Brooke Pratley (2006 World Champion women’s double scull), and Amber Bradley (2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist women’s quad scull) suggests the crew has the credentials to be in medals contention again in Munich. Making her Australian Senior Team debut, Alice McNamara will compete in the women’s lightweight quad scull. A bronze medallist in the lightweight double scull at the 2005 U/23 World Championships, McNamara and her crewmates will be out to reclaim Australia’s 2002 World Best Time in the lightweight quad from the all conquering Chinese combination. In his first Australian team, Tom Larkins is the final MUBC representative to be pulling on the green and gold this year. After an impressive showing at selection trials, Larkins will comprise part of an exciting men’s U/23 eight that will compete at their respective World Championships in Strathclyde, Scotland from July 26th to 29th. In addition to the MUBC athletes, Melbourne University alumni have also been selected to Australian Teams. David Crawshay will compete in the men’s double scull at Munich’s World Championships, following an undefeated domestic racing season in the single scull. Robyn Selby-Smith will rejoin the women’s heavyweight sweep squad as reigning world champion in the coxless four. While Athens Olympian and Environmental Resource Management undergraduate Sarah Outhwaite, will also form part of the women's sweep squad. Outhwaite missed the 2006 international season through injury, however was part of the 2005 World Champion women's eight, and was also silver medallist in coxless pair in the same year. The University's final representative is Media and Communications student Lisa Szatsznajder.
