Firing five second-half goals, Melbourne University Rangers left West Preston reeling in their FFV North-West Provisional League encounter at Princes Park. Taking a 1-0 lead into the main break, the Rangers exploded in the second half, tearing the game and West Preston’s defense apart. On the final whistle, the Rangers were 6-0 victors over league cellar-dwellers West Preston. For the victors, Adam Griffith and Martin-Bjorn Prahl scored two goals apiece, with singles to Georgios Karantzas and Melvin Thancanamootoo. However, there will be little time to relax for the Rangers, as their focus switches to their away clash with league leaders Laverton Park this forthcoming weekend. The Rangers currently sit mid-table in 6th position. In the reserves action, Rangers were defeated 1-0 by their West Preston opponents. The University’s Third Division Central team was the club’s other big winners at the weekend, claiming a 5-1 victory over Collingwood City. University remains in 3rd place on this divisional table. In Thirds North-West competition, University drew 1-1 with Cairnlea. In the Women’s Premier League competition, University continues to struggle following their promotion to the state’s pre-eminent league. Playing away to 5th placed Sandringham, University matched the home-side in an eagerly contested first half. With scores tied 0-0 at the main break, a second half goal to Sandringham would prove decisive, as University went down 0-1. University’s reserves’ fixture was not so close, conceding their match 0-8 against their Sandringham opponents. After 12 rounds, the University’s first team now sits 10th on the Premier League table, and will face sixth placed Preston Lion in their round 13 match-up. With both University and Preston winless in the last month of competition, this weekend’s fixture will be hotly contested, as both sides seek valuable premiership points. |
