Footballers swing away at Uni Blacks Golf Day

The weather was warm, the golf course was in brilliant condition and the golf wasn’t bad either. Kingston Heath, one of Melbourne’s famed sand-belt courses and home to seven Australian Opens, was the venue for the University Black’s annual golf day which saw some 57 members and guests tee off in a Stableford competition.

Many past greats of the club were in attendance including ten players from the 1974 VAFA A Grade Premiership team. At the business end of the competition, club stalwart (and very handy golfer) Jack Batten came home in first place with 38 Stableford points. Melbourne University Sport guest and University Maintenance Manager Colin Reiter took second place with 35 points, and Nick Tunbridge came home in third place.

Golf was followed by drinks, a tasty meal and plenty of old war stories in Kingston Heath’s spectacular clubhouse. The Age columnist and renowned sporting author John Harms entertained during dinner with football anecdotes that had the audience in fits of laughter.  Congratulations to Rod McLean and Ray Wilson for organizing a sensational day.

Don’t miss out on the next University community golf day – the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup to be held in late November. For more information, please contact Rod Warnecke, Sport Development Manager on P: 03 8344 8891 or E: rod.warnecke@unimelb.edu.au.
